Jill Stein.

Misinformation is in vogue regarding the current conflict in Iran. Thus, it is not surprising that the speed of social media is increasingly being mixed with the new technological power of artificial intelligence to produce rather devious results. This new mix of disinformation was put on stark display recently in claiming its newest victim, Dr. Jill Stein, the three-time Green Party presidential nominee. She, retweeting a post from an account named “Tayyaba Usmani” which has since been deleted, amplified a fabricated report claiming that 173 U.S. Delta Force operators had been captured in Tehran.

The image in question involved a sensational image purportedly showing American Delta Force commandos being held by Iranian forces following a “disastrous” raid ending in the capture of 173 U.S. commandos. Stein quickly quote-tweeted the post to her following, writing: “holy shit. if confirmed this changes everything.”

The confirmation Stein floated never came, because the event never happened. The images were entirely synthetic, generated by artificial intelligence. Users were apparently quick to realize the lack of credibility of this piece of misinformation. X’s crowdsourced fact-checking tool, Community Notes, intervened, appending a contextual disclaimer directly beneath Stein’s post. The note explicitly pointed out that the images contained a visible Gemini AI watermark and provided links to fact-checks from Agence France-Presse (AFP) and GMA Network, confirming that no such U.S. military fracas had taken place.

By sharing the unverified claim, Stein inadvertently turned her platform into a conduit for wartime disinformation, demonstrating how easily AI-generated propaganda can bypass human skepticism during moments of high global tension. Various users were quick, in turn, to joke about Stein’s predicament regarding the AI-generated image. One Instagram user with over 500,000 followers declared the misinformation “fact”, stating that he was the 3rd and 5th soldier in line in jest.

The 2026 conflict with Iran is arguably the first major war to unfold in an ecosystem saturated with advanced, easily accessible generative AI. As deepfakes and AI-generated combat photos flood timelines, platforms like X have faced problems filtering out misinformation from the stream of wartime information, especially sophisticated AI-generated misinformation. Unfortunately, Stein’s post involving a visible Gemini AI mark does not put great backing behind the idea that she tries to at least minorly fact check her own media diet before reposting. Stein’s viral misstep most certainly serves as a prominent cautionary tale in an era where synthetic media can instantly simulate catastrophic military defeats, as the impulse to share breaking news if not tempered by a rigorous demand for proof can result in such embarrassing results.
