While the Green candidate for Governor, Butch Ware, has certainly received much media attention for a third party candidate in a primary election, that cannot be said of the candidate of the Libertarian Party of California for the upcoming June Primary. Looking into the nominated candidate, Nicholas Aiden Thompson is a political activist and indeed the Libertarian candidate running for governor of California in the 2026 election. While he is not a nationally known political figure, his campaign represents a trend where younger, outsider candidates use campaigns to push specific political philosophies and challenge the existing political system. Thompson has, perhaps quite predictably, centered his campaign on individual liberty, government transparency, and reducing what he describes as government overreach into everyday life.

Thompson was born in Chico, California, and graduated from Pleasant Valley High School. He is an ardent supporter of ranked choice voting, responding in a Ballotpedia query on policy positions one is passionate to to “Advocating for the viability and importance of all voices in elections. A third-party vote is not wasted. I am very passionate for ranked choice voting to ensure fair representation and empower voters to choose candidates they truly support.”

Ideologically, Thompson’s views fall firmly within libertarian political philosophy. He has cited the book The Libertarian Mind by David Boaz as a key influence on his beliefs. That book outlines core libertarian principles such as limited government, free markets, individual rights, and skepticism of centralized authority, which are ideas that appear consistently throughout Thompson’s campaign platform and writings. His policy positions include support for ranked-choice voting (as previously mentioned), reducing penalties for non-violent crimes, protecting digital privacy, expanding the right to repair consumer products, reducing zoning laws to allow more housing construction, and decriminalizing drugs in favor of treatment-based approaches.

One notable aspect of Thompson’s candidacy is his age. In a candidate survey published by Ballotpedia, he stated that the first historical event he remembers is the Killing of Osama bin Laden, which he said occurred when he was five years old. This implies he was born around 2005 or 2006, making him unusually young for a gubernatorial candidate in a large state like California. His campaign directly addresses this, arguing that younger leaders bring new perspectives and are less connected to entrenched political systems and lobbying networks.

Thompson’s rhetoric is strongly anti-establishment and often frames the California state government as overly bureaucratic and controlling, raising eyebrows by posting a “DECLARATION OF WAR” on such practices. His campaign platform frequently focuses on the idea that government has grown too large and too involved in personal and economic decisions. He argues for a significant reduction in regulations, especially those affecting small businesses, housing construction, and technology. He also advocates for what he calls “open source government,” where publicly funded software and systems should be transparent and accessible to the public.

Despite the ambitious scope of his platform, Thompson has unfortunately gained little steam for now in the California gubernatorial race. While California politics is indeed dominated by the Democratic and Republican parties, and Libertarian candidates historically receive a small percentage of the vote, this year the chaos around there being no clear Democratic frontrunner, the possibility of there being two Republicans on the general election ballot, and multiple lawsuits on the validity of candidates has drowned out the oxygen for Thompson’s message to shine through. Thompson himself has published little public material unlike the interviews and political activity carried out by left-wing political parties, with the latest available information being a blog post from January.

In broader terms, Nicholas Thompson represents the latest torch-bearer of the specific strand of libertarian thought that combines civil liberties, anti-surveillance views, free-market economics, criminal justice reform, and skepticism toward both major political parties. Whether or not he performs well in the primary election, his candidacy, as those that came before him, will reflect ongoing dissatisfaction among voters with traditional political institutions and that the desire for alternatives outside the two-party system of the Libertarian manner is still alive in the Golden State.
