WASHINGTON D.C.– The Green Party of the United States has advanced a national resolution condemning what it describes as ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Sudan, with a focus on atrocities in Darfur attributed to the Rapid Support Forces.

The proposal, introduced by the party’s Steering Committee and managed on the floor by Charles Ostdiek, entered its discussion phase on Jan. 19 and is scheduled for a vote from Feb. 2 through Feb. 8. The measure requires a two thirds presence quorum and approval by a majority of yes and no votes cast.

According to the resolution’s summary, the party calls on the United States government to designate the Rapid Support Forces as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, citing the U.S. State Department’s January 2025 determination that RSF forces committed genocide in Darfur during the current conflict. The proposal also urges expanded international action to halt the flow of arms and resources that have fueled violence and famine across Sudan.

The background section outlines a conflict that began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, describing widespread killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and ethnic cleansing targeting Massalit and other non Arab communities in Darfur. Various human rights organizations are cited as documenting patterns consistent with crimes against humanity.

The proposal further raises allegations of external support to the RSF, including arms, logistics, and financial assistance routed through neighboring countries. While the United Arab Emirates has denied providing such support, the resolution argues that credible reporting and ongoing United Nations inquiries justify targeted sanctions and stronger enforcement of an arms embargo.

If adopted, the resolution would commit the Green Party to several policy positions. These include ethical divestment from UAE state funds or corporations alleged to be tied to RSF support, support for voluntary consumer boycotts coordinated with diaspora and human rights groups, and calls for investigations into all external actors supplying parties accused of atrocity crimes in Sudan.

The measure also endorses an expanded United Nations arms embargo covering all parties to the conflict, protected humanitarian air and land corridors to address famine and medical emergencies, and full cooperation with International Criminal Court investigations into crimes committed since April 2023.

The resolution further directs party spokespersons and committees to issue a public statement within seven days of adoption, transmit letters to U.S. and U.N. officials, and engage with humanitarian and diaspora partners to coordinate advocacy efforts.
