An opinion column circulating among Libertarian Party activists has outlined competing approaches to a potential disaffiliation of the party’s New Hampshire affiliate, highlighting internal disagreements over both strategy and process ahead of an upcoming national convention.

The commentary, written by Tom Rowlette as part of a recurring internal series, notes what it describes as a broad consensus among engaged party members in favor of disaffiliating the New Hampshire organization. However, the author raises concerns that the method chosen to pursue that outcome could generate unnecessary conflict, particularly if multiple procedural approaches are attempted simultaneously during convention proceedings.

Several possible courses of action were identified, each with procedural and political tradeoffs. One option involves challenging the New Hampshire delegation during the convention’s credentials process, which could remove the delegation early but was characterized as lacking legitimacy. Another approach would be to formally add disaffiliation to the convention agenda, a method described as procedurally sound but potentially time-consuming and vulnerable to failure in a highly visible setting.

Additional strategies include interrupting convention business to force consideration of the issue, a move requiring a supermajority vote to suspend rules, or pursuing disaffiliation indirectly by electing members to the Libertarian National Committee who would act on the matter shortly after the convention. A further option would involve passing a resolution directing the national committee to take action, though questions remain about timing, enforceability, and the risk of rejection.

The column also raised the possibility that multiple strategies could be attempted in parallel, a scenario described as likely to consume significant time and organizational energy while increasing tensions among factions. The author suggests that a more coordinated approach would be preferable but expresses skepticism that party groups will unify around a single plan.
