SACRAMENTO, CA — The Libertarian Party of California (LPC) has officially endorsed the “Undo the Top Two” ballot initiative, a move aimed at dismantling the state’s current top-two primary system. The initiative seeks to allow all recognized political parties to field candidates in the November General Election, a change the LPC argues would restore voter choice and representation.

The Party’s Executive Committee unanimously reaffirmed its support for the initiative during its August meeting, having previously backed the measure before its official release for circulation by the California Secretary of State. LPC Chair Loren Dean emphasized that the existing system has effectively sidelined third-party candidates, leaving many voters without a representative option on the General Election ballot. Dean noted that California’s prohibition on write-in votes for partisan offices further limits voter options.

Dean stated, “California’s elections should expand voter choices, not restrict them.” The LPC contends that ending the top-two primary would provide Californians with a broader range of candidates in November, enabling more political parties, including the Libertarian Party, to present their nominees to the electorate. The Party has encouraged all eligible voters to sign the petition in support of the initiative.

While the LPC advocates for additional electoral reforms such as ranked-choice voting and proportional representation, the Party views the “Undo the Top Two” initiative as a critical step toward restoring electoral diversity and fairness in California. The LPC has long opposed the top-two system, including its original establishment via Proposition 14 in 2010, and recently joined other minor parties in a federal lawsuit challenging its constitutionality.
